# Studies

> Ask how a pattern has behaved historically before you trade it.

A study measures how often something happened in the past and what followed. Ask in words, name the market and the window, and the Agent runs it on stored history and shows the sample size.

## Studies you can run

| Study | The question it answers |
| - | - |
| **Opening range breakout** | How often does the first range break, which side first, and how far does it run? |
| **Initial balance breakout** | The same for the first hour's range. |
| **Overnight range breakout** | Does price leave the overnight range at the open, and what follows? |
| **Gap fill** | How often does a gap fill, and how long does it take? |
| **ATR** | How far does this market typically move in a day or a session? |
| **Fair value gaps** | How do gaps between candles behave once formed? |
| **Prior day and prior days' range** | What happens at, inside and beyond yesterday's or the last few days' high and low? |
| **Prior weeks' range** | The same on weekly ranges. |
| **High and low of the day** | At what time of day are highs and lows usually set? |
| **Outside days** | What follows a day that takes out both sides of the day before? |
| **Red and green days** | How do runs of up and down days continue or reverse? |
| **Session correlation** | How does one session (Asia, London) relate to the next? |
| **SMT divergence** | When two correlated indices disagree at a high or low, what follows? |
| **Event study** | How does price behave around a scheduled event such as CPI or an earnings date? |
| **Similar setups** | Find past days that look like today and show how they ended. |

## Read a study properly

* Look at the **sample size** first. A pattern seen eleven times is not a pattern.
* Look at the **spread**, not just the average: the typical move against you matters as much as the typical move for you.
* Ask for **a different window** to see whether it holds outside the stretch you looked at.
* Turn a study into a rule with `backtest this`. See [Backtests](https://docs.traderos.ai/strategies/backtests.md).
